Brief Biography:

Joann Whalen completed a B.Sc. (Agr) in agricultural chemistry from Dalhousie University, an M.Sc. in soil biochemistry from McGill University and a Ph.D. in environmental science from Ohio State University. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Oregon State University and a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada before joining the faculty at McGill University in 2000. Her research program examines nutrient cycling and losses of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus from the soil-plant system at scales ranging from the rhizosphere to the ecosystem level. She is particularly interested in how soil microbial communities and earthworms affect soil fertility and crop production in agroecosystems. She teaches courses in soil fertility, nutrient management planning and soil ecology. She is a member of the professional Ordre des agronomes du Quebec and an Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science and an Associate Editor for Agronomy Journal.
